the fifth day

Yesterday, as we drove from Texas to New Mexico we found out why they call that area "big sky" country. We were able to see for dozens of miles in each direction. At one point there was a rainstorm in one small area but sun for the other 350 degrees around us. We did manage to drive right through the rain at one point. Lucky us. It did drop the temperature 20 degrees though. Josh says you can see a hill that looks really close but it takes 10 - 15 minutes to drive to and Dad was driving very fast - speed limit was 80 mph :-)

Once in NM we went to Carlsbad Cavern. In Carlsbad Cavern, we took a tour through a cave discovered by a 16-year-old boy. We started in a main room 750 feet below the surface (we took an elevator down, we could have walked but we were late). The tour took us another 300 feet down. We saw so many cool things. (Pictures will come at a later time)

We stayed for the evening bat flight. Each night about 200,000 - 500,000 bats fly out from the mouth of the "Natural Entrance" of the cave. Last night the bats came out kind of slowly for a while, and not in a big bunch like sometimes happens. It was definitely interesting, something you don't see everyday ...

Then we had a 1.5 hour drive to the hotel, ugh, which is in Roswell, NM. Did we mention there is a UFO convention this week ??? Yes, we are surrounded by ...

Today is Friday and we are making a long drive to Mesa Verde, CO. We'll post more after we see the cliff dwellings tomorrow morning.
